High-performance and modified car insurance in Ireland

High-performance and modified car insurance in Ireland

A high-performance car is insured on the same three levels of cover as any other. What changes is the price, because Citizens Information lists engine size and value among the factors insurers price on, and which insurers will quote, because each decides the models it covers. GMIB.ie puts your details to 14 different insurers, and where the form cannot give a price straight away one of our agents reviews them and calls you back with the options. Enter the registration and your details below to get a quote in under 60 seconds.

GMIB.ie is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland and rated 4.6 out of 5 on Trustpilot.

Why a high-performance car costs more to insure

Citizens Information gives the reasons. The value of the car counts for third party, fire and theft and comprehensive cover because a more valuable car costs more to replace, and a more powerful car is considered more likely to be involved in an accident. Age counts too: Citizens Information notes that insurers treat young drivers as a higher-risk category, so a young driver in a powerful car carries both.

Where the car is kept is asked as well. Citizens Information notes that some companies impose a loading if the car is not kept in a garage or driveway at night, and lists secure parking among the steps that can cut the cost. Give the details accurately.

Each insurer decides which models it will quote, so one refusal is not a verdict. Three written refusals bring you under Insurance Ireland’s Declined Cases Agreement, and its committee arranges a quote; see our refused car insurance page.

Modified cars: what to declare and how to compare quotes

Any change from the factory specification, whether a remap, exhaust, induction, suspension, brakes, wheels or bodywork, is something to declare. Citizens Information says to disclose all relevant information to an insurer when buying or renewing, and that if you are unsure whether a fact is relevant you should disclose it and let the insurer decide. Under the Consumer Insurance Contracts Act 2019 you must answer the insurer’s questions honestly and with reasonable care, and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), the State’s consumer watchdog, warns that a policy can be cancelled for undisclosed details and that you may then find it difficult to get cover. Keep the receipts and a list of the changes, with dates.

Compare like with like: the excess, and whether windscreen cover, breakdown assistance and a replacement or hire car are included, because the CCPC says those benefits vary between insurers. A lower price on a policy that excludes a modification you declared is not a lower price.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need special insurance for a high-performance car?

No. The same third party, third party fire and theft and comprehensive levels apply; the price and the insurers willing to quote change with the car.

  • Will a remap or engine tuning affect my insurance?

It is a change from factory specification, so declare it. Citizens Information says to disclose anything that may be relevant and let the insurer decide, and the CCPC warns that undisclosed details can lead to the policy being cancelled. Each insurer decides how it treats a given modification.

  • Why is high-performance car insurance more expensive?

Citizens Information gives two reasons: a more valuable car costs more to replace, and a more powerful car is considered more likely to be involved in an accident. A young driver adds a third, since insurers treat young drivers as higher risk.

  • Does it matter where I keep the car overnight?

Yes. Citizens Information says some insurers load a car not kept in a garage or driveway at night, and counts secure parking as a way to cut the cost.

  • What if an insurer refuses to quote my car?

Ask for the reason in writing and try others; each insurer decides which models it covers. Three written refusals bring you under Insurance Ireland’s Declined Cases Agreement, and its committee arranges a quote.

  • What do I need to get a quote?

For the Quick Quote: the car’s registration and value, your area, name, date of birth, licence type, no-claims years, mobile number, email, cover start date and Eircode. For the full quote: the exact model, engine size, a dated list of modifications, and where the car is kept at night.
