Student Car Insurance in Ireland: the Student and Young Driver Offer

If you are a student insuring a car in your own name, GMIB.ie runs a student and young driver offer: students and young drivers could save up to 47%. The amount depends on your own circumstances and the quotes available to you; 47% is the maximum saving seen under the offer so far, not a guarantee for every driver. This page explains how the offer is applied, what a quote needs from you, and the things that shape a student premium, drawing on Citizens Information and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), the State’s consumer watchdog,.

GMIB.ie compares car insurance quotes from 14 different insurers, and where the form cannot give a price straight away one of our agents reviews your details and calls you back with the options. The Quick Quote form is at the foot of this page.

How the student and young driver offer works

Start with a Quick Quote. It asks for the car’s registration (or make and model) and value, your area, name, date of birth, licence type, no-claims years, mobile number, email, cover start date and Eircode, and gives a quote in under 60 seconds. It does not ask whether you are a student.

Mention it when we follow up. When one of our agents calls or emails about your quote, say that you are a student or a young driver and we apply the offer from there. If you have completed your Essential Driver Training, tell us that too, because it counts for more under the offer. Our young drivers car insurance page covers the same offer for young drivers who are not students.

Have your driver number ready. The CCPC explains that since 31 March 2025 anyone taking out or renewing motor insurance in Ireland must give their driver number, and the driver number of any named driver; Citizens Information notes it is in section 4(d) of a licence or learner permit. The number is not needed for the Quick Quote, but the full quote cannot complete without it.

Answer the full quote accurately. The Consumer Insurance Contracts Act 2019 requires answers that are honest and given with reasonable care. Where you live during term, who else drives the car and how it is used all belong in the answers, and a change of address for college is worth telling us about.

What shapes a student premium

Years as a named driver. Citizens Information suggests that a young driver consider joining a parent’s policy as a named driver to build a safety record, and says some companies offer discounts to young people insuring in their own name if they have been a named driver. The CCPC adds that a no-claims bonus is earned by the policyholder only, not by named drivers, so those years are a record rather than a bonus. Our full quote asks about them.

Fronting. Citizens Information describes fronting as the main driver of a car, typically a son or daughter, declaring a more experienced driver, usually a parent, as the main driver to reduce the premium, and says it is illegal and can lead to the policy being cancelled or a fraud conviction. If you are the main driver, the policy goes in your name.

The excess. The CCPC says a higher excess usually means a lower premium, and that you cannot claim for amounts below the excess. Set it at a level you could pay in the week of a claim.

The car. Citizens Information lists the size, age and value of the vehicle among the factors insurers use to set a premium. Our full quote asks the make, model, value and any modifications, and the answer is compared across the panel rather than assumed.

Where it is parked. Parking in a secure location is on Citizens Information’s list of ways to reduce a premium, and the full quote asks where the car is kept overnight, which for a student may be a term address rather than home.

A telematics policy. Some policies use an app or a small device to record how the car is driven. Our telematics car insurance page explains what is recorded and how it is used at renewal, and our agents can tell you whether one is available for your quote.

Penalty points and claims. Both are asked in the full quote. Citizens Information lists claims history among the factors insurers use, and avoiding driving convictions and penalty points among the ways to reduce a premium. Our penalty points insurance page covers the rules for learner and novice drivers, who are disqualified at seven points rather than twelve.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do students get a discount on car insurance with GMIB.ie?

GMIB.ie runs a student and young driver offer under which students and young drivers could save up to 47%. Start a Quick Quote, then mention that you are a student when one of our agents follows up. The amount depends on your circumstances and the quotes available to you; 47% is the maximum saving seen under the offer so far, not a guarantee.

  • I mainly drive a car insured in my parent’s name. What should I do?

If you are the main driver, the policy goes in your name; naming a parent as the main driver instead is fronting, which is illegal. Start your own Quick Quote, tell us about your years as a named driver when we follow up, and mention that you are a student so the offer is applied.

  • Which address do I give if the car lives at college during term?

The full quote asks where the car is kept overnight. Give the address where it is actually parked during term, and tell us if that changes between terms, because the answer forms part of the policy and a change of address is something to report to us.

  • Can a parent pay for a policy that is in my name?

Yes. Who pays and whose name is on the policy are separate questions. The policy is in the main driver’s name, and the CCPC notes that the no-claims bonus is earned by the policyholder. If paying in one go is difficult, we can arrange premium finance through Premium Credit; our agents explain the cost when they call.

  • Does completing Essential Driver Training help?

Under the GMIB.ie student and young driver offer, completed Essential Driver Training counts for more, so tell us when we follow up on your quote. Whether an insurer also reflects it in its own price is a matter for each insurer, and the full quote asks about your training and licence history.
