No special policy is needed for a sports car. The same three levels of cover apply. What changes is the price, because Citizens Information lists engine size and value among the factors insurers price on, and which insurers will quote, because each decides the models it covers. GMIB.ie puts your details to 14 different insurers, and where the form cannot give a price straight away one of our agents reviews them and calls you back with the options. Enter the registration and your details below to get a quote in under 60 seconds.
GMIB.ie is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland and rated 4.6 out of 5 on Trustpilot.
Citizens Information gives two reasons. The value of the car counts for third party, fire and theft and comprehensive cover because a newer or more valuable car costs more to replace. And a more powerful car is considered more likely to be involved in an accident. It also notes that insurers treat young drivers as a higher-risk category, so a young driver in a powerful car carries both.
Modifications. Citizens Information says you must disclose all relevant information to an insurer when buying or renewing, and that if you are unsure whether a fact is relevant you should disclose it and let the insurer decide. Treat every change from the factory specification, whether engine, exhaust, suspension, wheels or bodywork, that way, and keep the receipts. The Consumer Insurance Contracts Act 2019 requires answers that are honest and given with reasonable care; the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission’s (CCPC) warning is that undisclosed details can lead to the policy being cancelled and make later cover hard to find.
Where it is kept. Citizens Information notes that some companies impose a loading if the car is not kept in a garage or driveway at night, and lists secure parking among the steps that can cut the cost. Give the details accurately.
Compare like with like: the excess, and whether windscreen cover, breakdown assistance and a replacement or hire car are included, because the CCPC says those benefits vary between insurers. Check each quote for what it includes rather than comparing prices alone.
Each insurer decides which models it will quote, so one refusal is not a verdict. Three written refusals bring you under Insurance Ireland’s Declined Cases Agreement, and its committee arranges a quote; see our refused car insurance page. Young driver? See young drivers car insurance. Imported car? Our page on insurance for Japanese import cars covers imports. For the general rules, see car insurance in Ireland.
Have ready the registration, the exact model and engine size, a list of modifications with receipts, where the car is kept at night, your licence and your no-claims bonus letter. To talk it through, call 0818 92 92 42, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm.

No. The same third party, third party fire and theft and comprehensive levels apply; only the price and the insurers willing to quote change.
Yes, every change from factory specification. If you are unsure whether it counts, Citizens Information’s advice is to disclose it and let the insurer decide.
Not in how it is priced: Citizens Information lists engine size, the age of the vehicle and its value among the factors, and the label does not appear. Our high-performance and modified car insurance page covers performance saloons, modified cars and the questions they raise.
You can apply. Citizens Information lists a powerful car and a young driver as factors that raise the premium, and each insurer decides which models it covers for which drivers. Compare quotes rather than assume, and see our young drivers page for what else helps.
Yes. Citizens Information says some insurers load a car not kept in a garage or driveway at night, and counts secure parking as a way to cut the cost.
For the Quick Quote: the car’s registration and value, your area, name, date of birth, licence type, no-claims years, mobile number, email, cover start date and Eircode. For the full quote: the exact model, engine size, modifications, and where the car is kept at night.
