7 of the best car hacks

These handy tips will make your car cleaner, more enjoyable and might even save you some money…

1. Park facing the east

In cold weather, figure out which direction is east and park your car with the windscreen facing that way. (If you don’t know which way east is simply face west and then turn around.) Obviously the sun rises from the east so this will maximise the amount of sunlight your car gets early in the morning, hopefully thawing out your windscreen just in time for your commute.

2. Use hand sanitizer to melt ice

The alcohol in hand sanitizer is excellent at de-icing frozen locks and handles. Just give it a little squirt and that ice should disappear in no time at all. It’s also great for sanitizing your hands.

3. Use seat warmers to heat your food

Not all cars have them but if your vehicle is of the fancy variety, seat warmers are a great way of preventing your food from going cold. It won’t fry an egg for you but it’ll keep your takeaway nice and toasty.

4. Use a shoe as a cup holder

Stuck for somewhere to put your beverage? A shoe is the perfect place to keep your drink secure and upright. You can even adjust the size of your makeshift cup holder by tightening or loosening the laces. Remember: this hack works best if there aren’t any feet in the shoe.

5. Use nail polish to cover up scratches

Some vehicle maintenance now and did you know you can use nail polish to cover up dings and scratches on your car’s exterior? We recommend using a similar colour to your existing paint job. (If you own a black car it’s probably worth befriending a goth, just in case.)

6. Use toothpaste to clean your headlights

Apply a coat of toothpaste to the plastic cover over your headlights. Allow it to dry for a bit before washing it off with clean water and then drying. This should get rid of that foggy glaze while also reducing the risk of gum disease.

7. Boost the range of your remote alarm by holding it against your chin

This sounds weird but it actually works. By placing your key fob directly under your chin you can significantly increase its range. Your head is filled with fluids which act as a natural conductor for the signal, basically turning your skull into a big antenna. If you’re worried about sending these signals through your own head, simply borrow one from a passer-by.

All the best,
