Distractions to avoid while driving

We all know it’s important to remain focused while on the road. The tiniest of mistakes could have disastrous consequences so it’s crucial to limit the amount of distractions that could potentially put you off. Here’s a list of some things that commonly interfere with drivers’ concentration.

1. Your phone

Unsurprisingly, smart phones are one of the biggest distractions for modern day motorists. We all use our phones for so many things it can be difficult to put them down no matter what the situation. All drivers should have a hands-free kit and do their best to refrain from using their device while on the road.

2. Adjusting car settings

As the amount of interactive technology in our vehicles continues to increase, so too do the distraction levels associated with adjusting our car’s settings. As with your phone, you should try to keep your interaction with the radio and other in-car applications to a minimum.

3. Eating

Even if you’re up the walls and your commute is the only time you can get some sustenance before work, you really shouldn’t eat when you’re behind the wheel. Eating, drinking and even smoking can all distract you from your driving, so pull over or wait until you arrive before chowing down.

4. Passengers

This is a major source of distraction for both experienced drivers and beginners alike. For parents, attending to young children can really take your attention away from where it needs to be. Young drivers, meanwhile, can often be badly distracted by friends alongside them and in the back seat. Passengers should remember that the driver needs to focus on driving.

5. Music

We all love listening to music while we drive but it’s important that we don’t let it become a distraction. Listening at an appropriate level will allow you to remain tuned in aware of your surroundings.
