How to get a healthy tan

Are we actually getting a proper summer this year? It’s hard to believe but apparently there’s a heatwave on the way. Temperatures this week are expected to soar to the high 20s, so we should have the perfect opportunity to work on our tans. But what is the best way to get a natural, healthy colour? Here are a few tips.

1. Clothing. Naturally enough you want to expose as much of your skin as possible to get an even tan, but maybe stop short of nudity in public places. There are laws against that sort of thing.

2. Timing. Try to sunbathe before 10am or after 4pm, especially if you have fair skin. These times are safer than soaking in the hot, midday sun and you’ll still be able to get a tan.

3. Sunscreen. It’s a common misconception that you can’t get a tan if you’re wearing sunscreen but that’s not the case. Sunscreen protects you from the harmful UV rays that cause sunburn but tanning is a completely separate process.

SPF 15-30 is recommended depending on your skin. According to experts, the benefits of wearing anything above 30 are negligible.

4. Sunglasses. Protect your eyes while you’re out in the sun by wearing appropriate sunglasses that have UV protection.

5. Accelerating lotions. Avoid these at all costs. Accelerating lotions and oils will increase your chances of burning, not tanning.

6. 20-30 minutes max. It might be tempting to stay outside all day but limit your sunbathing to 20-30 minutes at a time.

7. The other side. After 20-30 minutes, reapply your sunscreen and turn over to expose the rest of your body to the sun.

8. Reapply. If you get wet or sweaty, dry yourself off and reapply.

9. Water. Stay hydrated by drinking water at regular intervals. This is always a good idea but it’s even more important when you’re out in the sun.

10. Know when to stop. If you feel yourself start to burn or get too hot, or notice redness, that’s when it’s time to take a break. The best way to get a healthy tan is over the course of a few days or weeks.

Enjoy the sunshine!
