Teaching your child to drive: 7 simple steps
Learning to drive can be great source of anxiety for many young people so you should do whatever you can to make the process as stress-free as possible for your child. Here are some pointers to help you both along your way. They’ll be out driving safely on their own before you know it!
1. Help them prepare for the theory test
Before getting a learner’s permit your teen must first pass the theory test. Learning the rules of the road is an important first step. Help them revise and answer any questions they may have about the basics of road safety.
2. Set up lessons
The next step for your budding driver is completing their EDT (Essential Driver Training). This is made up of twelve one-hour sessions with an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor).
3. Speak with the ADI
It’s important to communicate with the ADI and find out how your child is doing. Are there particular areas that need improving? You can iron out these weaknesses when you’re out driving together.
4. Find somewhere suitable for lessons
When you’re teaching your teen yourself, you should try to find the right spot to conduct lessons. An empty carpark is normally a good place to start.
5. Stay positive
Try not to criticise our get frustrated with your teen. This will make things a lot more stressful for both of you. Instead stay positive and praise the good things they’re doing.
6. Don’t overload them with information
Take it slowly; they don’t have to learn everything in one day. Focus on individual skills and only move on to the next step when you’re both satisfied with their progress.
7. Instil good habits
This is a big one. You have a major responsibility to teach your student the right way to drive. Any bad habits picked up in this formative stage could stay with them permanently, so be thorough and don’t take any shortcuts!
