Young drivers: Choosing the perfect car

Between the costly lessons, the stress of the test and trying to sort out insurance, there’s so much for young drivers to deal with. Choosing the right car can be another challenge, but if you get this one step right it could help you with the others. Here are some things to consider when buying your first car.

1. Size

Size definitely matters when it comes to buying your first car. Although you’ll want to invest in something that’s durable and comfortable, smaller vehicles generally cost less to purchase and maintain. It will also cost less to insure a more compact vehicle, and certain tasks, such as parking, can be easier when you’re behind the wheel of a modest motor.

2. New or second hand?

No one wants to drive a clapped out old banger but there are certainly some advantages to buying a second hand vehicle. They’re less expensive for a start, and they also cost less to insure. On the other hand, it’s easy to get stung if you’re not careful. Buying from a used car dealer rather than a private seller will give you a bit more security but you should still take all the necessary precautions, such as getting the car checked by an independent third party.

3. Engine size

Even if you can afford it and like your motors big and powerful, it’s advisable to go for a car with a smaller engine, especially if you’re a young driver. Vehicles with small engines and lower horsepower are cheaper to maintain and easier to insure.

4. Petrol or diesel?

Diesel is more energy rich and more efficient than petrol so it seems like the obvious choice for young drivers hoping to save as much money as possible. There is, however, a catch when it comes to buying a diesel vehicle: they’re often more expensive than petrol models. Diesel cars also require the occasional long drive to keep them ticking over properly so if you only travel short distances, petrol might be the way to go.

5. Fuel economy

The relationship between the distance travelled and the amount of fuel consumed by the vehicle is hugely important. You really need to know how many miles your car gets to the gallon. The more miles you get per gallon, the cheaper the fuel bill.
